Description

At the recent launch of VVDN Technologies' Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Line in Manesar, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology highlighted a major milestone India’s electronics manufacturing sector has grown five times over the past decade, now exceeding Rupees 11 lakh crore in value.

Understanding Surface Mount Technology (SMT)

Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a production process where electronic components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). Emerging in the 1960s and 70s, SMT revolutionized electronics manufacturing by replacing the older Through-Hole Technology (THT), enabling the creation of more compact, cost-effective, and efficient devices.

Unlike traditional methods that require components to pass through holes in the PCB, SMT uses soldering techniques to attach components directly to the surface. Common methods include reflow soldering and wave soldering, both of which support large-scale automation and enhance production speed and consistency.

A component applied through this method is called a surface-mounted device (SMD). The full SMT assembly process typically includes applying solder paste, placing components, soldering, and cleaning. SMT is widely used across sectors such as consumer electronics, healthcare devices, and aerospace technology.

SMT vs. Through-Hole Technology (THT)

While THT involves inserting components through drilled holes, SMT skips this step by mounting components directly on the board. This approach offers several benefits:

  • Higher Component Density: SMT supports the miniaturization of electronic devices by allowing more components in a smaller area.

  • Lower Production Cost: Though the initial setup cost for SMT is higher, the overall production becomes more affordable due to automation.

  • Better Performance: SMT generally provides improved electrical performance and signal transmission.

  • Simplified Design: Without the need for drilled holes, PCB designs become less complex.

  • Faster Manufacturing: Using solder paste speeds up assembly and reduces labor.

  • Efficient Heat Management: SMT components dissipate less heat than THT parts.

However, one limitation is that SMT-based devices are harder to repair due to the densely packed and delicate structure.
