Operation ATALANTA, the European Union's naval mission, plays a vital role in safeguarding maritime routes in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Launched in 2008, Operation ATALANTA was initially focused on countering piracy and armed robbery near the Somali coast. Over time, its objectives have broadened. Today, the mission also safeguards World Food Programme (WFP) shipments, monitors illegal maritime activities such as drug smuggling and unregulated fishing, and contributes to maintaining maritime stability in high-risk zones.

Though piracy incidents have reduced over the years, the threat persists. In fact, pirate activities resurfaced in 2024, partly linked to Houthi rebel operations in the Red Sea. Operation ATALANTA remains equipped to respond to piracy within 48 to 72 hours, and its persistent presence serves as a strong deterrent to potential attackers.
Mandate Extension And Strategic Priorities
The operation's mandate has been extended until February 2027, allowing it to continue its core tasks—protecting commercial and humanitarian vessels, countering piracy, and overseeing illegal fishing activities. It also contributes to broader EU security goals in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing regional stability and maritime law enforcement.
Global Partnerships And Regional Engagement
Operation ATALANTA actively engages with other EU-led missions, such as EUCAP-Somalia (for capacity building) and EUTM-Somalia (for military training).
