In a significant step towards strengthening India’s role in global wildlife conservation, the Government of India has officially agreed to host the headquarters and secretariat of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). This agreement underscores India’s dedication to the preservation of the world’s seven major big cat species: the tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma. The IBCA was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Project Tiger, with the goal of fostering worldwide collaboration for the conservation, research, and habitat protection of these endangered species.

Headquarters Agreement

In 2024, the IBCA gained legal status as a treaty-based intergovernmental organization, following ratification by five nations: India, Liberia, Eswatini, Somalia, and Nicaragua. This formal recognition further solidifies the IBCA's role in international conservation efforts.

The agreement includes provisions for visa facilitation, privileges, and immunities for IBCA staff and premises. It also outlines operational guidelines, governance structures, and additional agreements to support the work of the alliance.

The agreement was signed by P Kumaran, Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs, on behalf of India, and S P Yadav, Director General of IBCA, representing the alliance.
