A team of researchers in Assam has recently identified a previously unknown species of frog, named Leptobrachium aryatium. This unique amphibian was discovered in the Garbhanga Reserve Forest, a rich biodiversity zone located near Guwahati. The species stands out with its striking orange-and-black eyes and a distinct throat pattern, along with its soft, rhythmic calls that echo during dusk.
The Research Journey
The discovery stems from research that originally began in 2004, with the focus initially on Leptobrachium smithi. At the time, limited data made it difficult to fully understand the diversity within the Leptobrachium genus in this region. However, recent findings of similar frog species in neighbouring countries such as Myanmar and Bangladesh prompted scientists to re-examine the population found in Assam. Using a detailed combination of physical measurements, genetic sequencing, and acoustic analysis, the team confirmed that this was a new and distinct species.
Unique Traits Of Leptobrachium aryatium
This newly discovered frog is notable not only for its vibrant eye coloration but also for the unique markings on its throat. Its vocalizations smooth and rhythmic are particularly active at twilight. Belonging to a genus known for their stout bodies and wide heads, Leptobrachium aryatium joins a family that now includes 38 recognized species across the globe.

The identification of this species highlights the ecological value of the Garbhanga Reserve Forest, an area increasingly under threat due to urban expansion and habitat degradation. Home to elephants, rare birds, and a wide variety of butterflies, the reserve is a critical haven for wildlife. The new species was named in honour of Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati, recognizing the institution’s significant role in shaping the researchers’ academic foundation.
