Description

India and Italy have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across critical areas such as defence, trade, sustainable energy, and advanced technologies. This renewed strategic alignment was the central focus of high-level discussions held in April 2025 between India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.

The dialogue marked a significant milestone in implementing the Joint Strategic Action Plan (JSAP) 2025–2029, a comprehensive framework to guide India–Italy engagement over the next five years. This structured plan aims to diversify bilateral relations and foster long-term partnerships in emerging sectors.

The JSAP was originally unveiled during a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. It builds on a shared vision of promoting peace, economic development, and innovation through multilateral collaboration.

Key Pillars Of India–Italy Strategic Partnership

  • Defence Cooperation: Joint ventures, military training programs, and enhanced maritime security initiatives.

  • Trade and Investment: Diversification of trade portfolios and support for SMEs and start-ups.

  • Clean Energy and Sustainability: Focus on green hydrogen, renewable energy technologies, and climate-friendly solutions.

  • Science, Innovation, and High Technology: Exchange in sectors like Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, and space exploration.

  • People-to-People Ties: Strengthening cultural and academic exchanges, tourism, and diaspora engagement.

India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC)

The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) is a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to revolutionize the movement of goods and people between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It reflects a shared commitment to building resilient and sustainable global supply chains.

Overview Of IMEEC

  • Launched During G20 New Delhi Summit (2023) - The corridor was officially announced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by a coalition of major global economies, including India, Italy, the European Union, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the United States.

  • Part of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) - IMEEC operates under the umbrella of the PGII, a G7-backed initiative introduced in 2021 to fund sustainable global infrastructure, particularly in developing regions.

  • Strategic Counter to China's BRI - The corridor is widely seen as a geopolitical alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), focusing on transparency, sustainability, and mutual benefit.

Structure Of IMEEC

Eastern Corridor

  • Connects India to key ports and logistics hubs in the Gulf region, enhancing trade and energy transport.

Northern Corridor

  • Links the Gulf countries with Southern and Central Europe, facilitating faster, safer, and greener freight movement to European markets.

IMEEC will integrate railways, ports, roadways, and digital infrastructure to create a seamless multimodal network. Its implementation is expected to reduce shipping time, lower carbon emissions, and stimulate regional economies.

Conclusion

The revitalized India–Italy strategic partnership, underpinned by the JSAP 2025–2029 and collaborative efforts in IMEEC, underscores both nations' dedication to creating a future-ready, rules-based global order. With Italy emerging as a key European ally, India continues to solidify its role as a global leader in sustainable development, technological innovation, and economic diplomacy.
