Description
Namami Gange Mission 2.0 (NGM 2.0) is the expanded phase of the original initiative launched in 2014, aimed at cleaning and rejuvenating the River Ganga. This enhanced version will continue through March 2026, with full financial backing from the central government, and is being executed under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), a division of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Primary Goals Of NGM 2.0
NGM 2.0 targets multiple facets of river restoration, including:
Sewage management and treatment
Riverfront improvement
Surface cleaning of the river
Afforestation efforts
Biodiversity protection
These efforts are intended to restore both the environmental health and cultural value of the Ganga River.
Project Scope And Execution
As of February 2024, the mission had launched 457 projects, with 280 already completed. To ensure effective implementation, 139 District Ganga Committees were formed, playing a crucial role in supervising projects at the local level and maintaining alignment with regional priorities.
Recent Milestones And Infrastructure Projects
In the latter half of FY 2024–25, seven significant projects reached completion, mainly across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi. These initiatives were directed toward reducing untreated sewage discharge into rivers and improving water quality.
The current total sewage treatment capacity developed under NGM 2.0 stands at 3,722 MLD (million litres per day), achieved through the commissioning of 157 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).
Highlighted STPs And Investment
Farrukhabad (U.P.) - A 47.70 MLD STP was completed at an investment of Rupees 261 crore, helping restore the natural integrity of the Ganga.
Ayodhya (U.P.) - A 33 MLD plant was set up for Rupees 222 crore to treat wastewater entering the Saryu River.
Muzaffarnagar (U.P.) - A 32.50 MLD STP, costing Rupees 234 crore, is now operational.
Bakhtiyarpur (Bihar) - A 10 MLD STP was installed with a budget of Rupees 85 crore.
Fatuha and Phulwari Sharif (Bihar) also saw the construction of modern STPs to improve local sanitation networks.
All these facilities were built under the Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) model, ensuring long-term sustainability.
Delhi's Landmark Achievement
Delhi now houses Asia’s largest STP, with a capacity of 564 MLD, built at a cost of Rupees 666 crore. This advanced facility employs A2O technology and complies with the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) environmental standards. It plays a key role in conserving the Yamuna River.
Budgetary Allocation And Impact
In FY 2024–25 alone, the government spent Rupees 3,184 crore on completed projects, showcasing a robust financial commitment to cleaner rivers and better urban water management.
