On the occasion of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary social reformer, acknowledging his enduring contributions to social justice and equality.
About Mahatma Jyotirao Phule
Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, widely known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule (1827–1890), was a visionary social reformer, educator, and writer from Maharashtra. He is celebrated for his pioneering efforts in fighting caste-based discrimination and advocating for women’s rights.
Born on April 11, 1827, in Pune, he came from the Mali community, a socially disadvantaged group. Despite facing caste prejudices, he pursued education at the Scottish Mission High School in Pune. His exposure to progressive ideals during his schooling laid the foundation for his future activism.
A pivotal moment in Phule’s life came in 1848 when he was subjected to discrimination at a Brahmin friend’s wedding. This experience profoundly influenced his commitment to challenging societal inequities.
His wife, Savitribai Phule, emerged as a key figure in their mission. She became India’s first woman teacher and worked closely with Jyotiba to establish educational opportunities for women and marginalized communities.
