India has introduced its latest advancement in missile technology with the unveiling of the BM-04 short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) at the Vigyan Vaibhav 2025 defense exhibition held in Hyderabad. This missile showcases India’s continued emphasis on strengthening its conventional deterrence and precision-strike capabilities.
Key Specifications Of BM-04 Missile
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the BM-04 represents a significant step in India’s missile program:
Dimensions - The missile measures 10.2 meters in length and 1.2 meters in diameter, with an overall weight of 11,500 kilograms.
Range and Payload - It features a dual-stage solid-fuel propulsion system and is capable of hitting targets up to 1,500 kilometers away. The missile carries a 500 kg conventional warhead and boasts an impressive circular error probability (CEP) of 30 meters, highlighting its accuracy.
Launch Platform -: It is launched from an indigenously-built six-wheeled Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL), enhancing mobility and rapid deployment.
Canisterized Design -: Similar to other modern Indian missile systems, the BM-04 is canisterized, enabling pre-fitted warheads and reducing launch preparation time.
Advanced Capabilities
The BM-04 is equipped with a Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB), giving it the ability to maneuver mid-flight and adopt unpredictable trajectories.
This maneuverability significantly increases its chances of penetrating sophisticated anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) defense systems.
The missile is designed for modularity and future upgrades, allowing for enhancements in warheads, guidance systems, and propulsion technologies as operational requirements evolve.
