Description
On March 25, 2025, the Himalayan High-Altitude Atmospheric & Climate Centre was officially opened in Nathatop, located in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. This landmark initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department and the Central University of Jammu, is dedicated to advancing climate science and monitoring in the Himalayas’ unique high-altitude environment.
Key Objectives
The Centre's primary mission is to enhance the accuracy of weather forecasts and conduct in-depth climate research, particularly in high-altitude ecosystems. It will focus on analyzing atmospheric behaviors such as cloud formation, weather systems, and the role of aerosols in climate processes.
Know About Nathatop
At 2,250 meters above sea level, Nathatop offers an ideal setting for atmospheric observation. The low pollution levels and clean air at this elevation provide optimal conditions for capturing high-quality, interference-free climate data—crucial for reliable research outputs.
ICE-CRUNCH Project
The Centre's flagship research initiative, ICE-CRUNCH, is a collaborative venture between Indian and Swiss scientists. This study delves into the characteristics of ice-nucleating particles and cloud condensation nuclei—elements that play a vital role in cloud microphysics and influence precipitation and climate patterns in the region.
Global Integration And Collaboration
Functioning under the framework of the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmospheric Watch Programme, the Centre aligns its efforts with international climate monitoring standards. Training Next Generation
