Amnesty International’s latest report, “Death Sentences and Executions 2024,” reveals a significant surge in the number of executions worldwide, reaching a staggering 1,518 cases the highest figure in nearly ten years. This spike is largely attributed to increased activity in Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, which together were responsible for 91% of all documented executions. The organization highlights this trend as deeply concerning, pointing to the use of capital punishment as a tool to silence opposition and target minority groups.
Execution Figures And Regional Trends
The number of recorded executions worldwide rose by 32% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Iran led with at least 972 executions, followed by Saudi Arabia with 345, and Iraq, which saw executions jump from 16 to at least 63. Notably, these figures do not include potentially thousands of unreported executions in countries such as China, North Korea, and Vietnam, where data remains inaccessible.
Political Suppression Through Capital Punishment
The report emphasizes the increasing use of the death penalty as a means of repression. In Iran, authorities executed individuals connected to the Women, Life, Freedom protests, including those with mental health conditions. Similarly, in Saudi Arabia, members of the Shiite community faced capital punishment following accusations related to anti-government demonstrations, often under the guise of combating terrorism.
Executions For Drug-Related Crimes
A significant portion over 40% of the world’s executions in 2024 were linked to drug-related offences. Amnesty International criticizes this practice, stating it violates international legal standards, which reserve the death penalty for the “most serious crimes.” Countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore continue to implement the death sentence for non-violent drug crimes, disproportionately affecting marginalized and vulnerable groups.
Global Shift Towards Abolition
Despite the increase in executions, the number of countries actively carrying them out remains small—only 15 in 2024, the lowest ever recorded. Meanwhile, 145 nations have now abolished the death penalty either entirely or in practice. Zimbabwe took a notable step forward by ending capital punishment for ordinary crimes, and the United Nations General Assembly continues to call for a global suspension of executions.
