Description

The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing to launch its Biomass mission on April 29, 2025, a significant step in global efforts to monitor forest health and carbon dynamics. The mission aims to improve our understanding of forests' vital role in regulating the Earth’s carbon cycle by using advanced radar technology to measure forest biomass and track deforestation.

Mission Overview: ESA Biomass Satellite

The Biomass mission involves a single satellite designed to orbit Earth at low altitude. Equipped with a P-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz, the satellite can penetrate deep forest canopies—something most existing satellite systems cannot do. This unique capability allows it to gather data on tree trunk mass and forest density, both of which are key indicators of carbon storage.

Over its planned five-year mission lifespan, the satellite will produce 3D forest maps, monitor forest growth and degradation, and observe changes in biomass over time using interferometric SAR techniques. These high-resolution measurements will help track carbon fluxes and the impact of deforestation, reforestation, and climate change.

Why Forest Monitoring Matters

Forests absorb around 16 billion metric tonnes of CO? every year, acting as one of the planet's largest carbon sinks. Despite this, current global data on forest mass and tree height is insufficient, creating challenges in accurately modeling their influence on climate. The Biomass mission addresses this gap by offering a consistent, global dataset on forest structure.

In 2023 alone, nearly 3.7 million hectares of tropical forest were lost, contributing to approximately 6% of annual global carbon emissions. Accurate and continuous observation of such changes is essential for climate mitigation policies, forest conservation, and carbon offset programs.

Expanding Scientific Goals

While forests are the primary focus, the Biomass satellite will also support research beyond forestry. It will observe ice sheet dynamics in Antarctica, track terrain changes in densely vegetated regions, and contribute to the creation of digital elevation models—useful for geological, hydrological, and ecological studies.

Part Of ESA’s Earth Explorer Programme

Biomass is the seventh mission under ESA’s Earth Explorer programme, an initiative designed to gather critical environmental data and support climate-related science. The programme emphasizes innovation and addresses urgent scientific questions about Earth’s systems.

List Of ESA’s Earth Explorer Missions:

  • GOCE (2009–2013) – Studied Earth's gravity field to enhance ocean current modeling and geoid measurements.

  • SMOS (launched 2009) – Measures soil moisture and ocean salinity to improve climate predictions.

  • CryoSat (launched 2010) – Monitors polar ice thickness and changes in ice volume due to climate change.

  • Swarm (launched 2013) – Explores Earth’s magnetic field to understand its internal and external dynamics.

  • Aeolus (2018–2023) – Used laser technology to capture global wind profiles and improve weather forecasting.

  • EarthCARE (launched May 2024) – Focuses on cloud formation, aerosols, and Earth’s radiation balance.

  • Biomass (launching 2025) – Measures forest biomass and carbon content to aid climate and deforestation studies.

  • FLEX (upcoming) – Will monitor plant health and photosynthesis by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence.

  • FORUM (upcoming) – First satellite to observe far-infrared radiation, crucial for climate modeling.

  • Harmony (upcoming) – Aims to monitor Earth's surface deformation and motion, including volcanoes, ice sheets, and sea-level changes.

Environmental And Policy Impact

The Biomass mission is expected to provide high-quality data to scientists, policymakers, and conservationists, enabling better decisions related to carbon budgeting, climate action, and forest protection. The mission also aligns with international climate commitments such as the Paris Agreement, offering critical data for tracking Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
