On April 5, 2025, the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was awarded to an unprecedented 13,508 physicists from four major CERN collaborations, highlighting global scientific cooperation and excellence. Established in 2013, the Breakthrough Prize initiative is backed by influential figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki, and Yuri and Julia Milner. The awards aim to spotlight remarkable contributions to science while inspiring the next generation of researchers. Life Sciences Laureates
Three groundbreaking contributions earned recognition in the life sciences category:
Development of GLP-1-based weight-loss therapies: Five researchers were honored for their pivotal work that led to the creation of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, revolutionizing obesity treatment.
Multiple Sclerosis Research: Alberto Ascherio and Stephen L. Hauser were recognized for uncovering the role of B-cells in MS and linking the condition to the Epstein-Barr virus.
Gene-editing Innovations: David R. Liu received the prize for developing advanced gene-editing methods such as base and prime editing, enabling precise and efficient DNA modifications.
Fundamental Physics Achievement
The 2025 prize in physics went to four CERN experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)—ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb. These collaborations deepened our understanding of the Higgs boson, which plays a central role in explaining how fundamental particles acquire mass. The research also examined novel particle interactions and validated key principles of the Standard Model. The award funds will contribute to continued research and doctoral scholarships at CERN.
Mathematics Prize: A Landmark In Geometric Langlands Program
Dennis Gaitsgory, affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, was honored for his instrumental work in proving the geometric Langlands conjecture a major milestone in modern mathematics. This achievement connects multiple branches of mathematics, particularly number theory, geometry, and harmonic analysis.
The Langlands Program, introduced in 1967 by Robert Langlands, aims to unify various mathematical disciplines. In 2024, Gaitsgory, alongside eight collaborators, published around 1,000 pages of rigorous research confirming deep geometric connections with calculus-based ideas. For his contributions, he received the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, along with a $3 million reward.
