In a significant development for wildlife conservation, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department captured the first photographic evidence of the Woolly Flying Squirrel in Miyar Valley, located in the Lahaul and Spiti district, in late 2024. Previously considered extinct until its dramatic rediscovery in 1994, this rare mammal's sighting marks a major milestone for biodiversity monitoring in the region.
Overview Of Woolly Flying Squirrel
The Woolly Flying Squirrel (Eupetaurus cinereus) is a unique and elusive mammal native to the northwestern Himalayas. Belonging to the monotypic genus Eupetaurus, it is nocturnal and primarily inhabits dry coniferous forests in isolated high-altitude pockets. Its rediscovery decades ago has been critical in drawing attention to its threatened conservation status.
Habitat And Geographical Range
This species is found in select areas of northern Pakistan and northwestern India. Documented sightings in Pakistan include regions such as Sai Valley, Gorabad, and Balti Gali. The squirrel's range is confined to a narrow altitudinal zone, making it highly susceptible to habitat disturbances and climate-related shifts.
Distinctive Physical Traits
The Woolly Flying Squirrel has gliding membranes stretching between its forelimbs and hindlimbs, which allow it to glide from tree to tree. Its thick, woolly fur is blue-grey on the back and light grey underneath, while its throat and ears feature creamy white fur. The soles of its feet are covered in black fur, providing additional insulation.
Conservation Status
Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, this mammal faces serious threats due to fragmented habitats and limited geographical range. Focused conservation efforts are essential to prevent further population decline.
Recent Conservation Breakthrough
The latest sighting was recorded using camera traps originally deployed as part of a snow leopard population survey. Conducted between October and December 2024, this initiative is a part of the larger Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) project, which aims to map snow leopard presence and assess the health of high-altitude ecosystems.
