The Delhi government is preparing to roll out its updated Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, signaling a significant step toward cleaner mobility and reduced air pollution in the national capital. The new draft outlines ambitious measures aimed at gradually eliminating fossil fuel-based vehicles, including CNG-powered autorickshaws and diesel-operated waste vehicles.
No More CNG Autorickshaws After August 15
As per the draft, the registration of new CNG autorickshaws will be stopped starting August 15, 2025. In addition, the renewal of existing CNG autorickshaw permits will no longer be permitted beyond this date. The plan mandates a transition to electric autorickshaws, either through replacement or retrofitting, particularly for vehicles older than ten years.
Electric Transition For Waste Management Vehicles
All municipal vehicles currently running on fossil fuels for solid waste collection are expected to shift to electric alternatives. The draft policy sets December 31, 2027, as the deadline to achieve a 100% electric fleet in this sector. The move is aimed at curbing pollution and improving overall air quality in the city.
Public Transport To Go Electric
The policy directs public transport agencies like Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) to exclusively purchase electric buses for city operations. Inter-state buses, meanwhile, must adhere to the BS VI emission standards, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
Ban On Petrol, Diesel Two-Wheelers And Goods Carriers
Under the proposed regulations:
No petrol, diesel, or CNG two-wheelers will be registered after August 15, 2026.
Three-wheeled goods carriers running on diesel or petrol will also be banned from registration from August 15, 2025.
These restrictions form part of a broader strategy to promote electric mobility across all transport segments.
New Norms For Private Car Ownership
The new policy will impose specific rules for private vehicle owners. Those intending to purchase an electric car must already own at least two vehicles. This guideline is designed to balance the vehicle population and encourage responsible adoption of EVs in the private sector.
Implementation Timeline And Next Steps
The current EV policy, which expired on March 31, has been extended by 15 days to allow for the finalization of the revised draft. The updated EV Policy 2.0 will be formally implemented following Delhi Cabinet approval.
