Description

The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has successfully arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, marking the last international stop of its ambitious Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition. This remarkable journey underscores India's growing maritime capabilities and highlights the role of women in naval exploration.

About INSV Tarini

INSV Tarini is a 56-foot-long sailing vessel that was indigenously designed and constructed in India. It was commissioned into the Indian Navy in February 2017, reinforcing the country's commitment to self-reliance under the Make in India initiative.

Key Features Of INSV Tarini

  • Builder - Constructed by Aquarius Shipyard Ltd., Goa, which specializes in manufacturing high-performance maritime vessels.

  • Advanced Navigation - Equipped with a Raymarine navigation suite, satellite communication systems, and emergency steering mechanisms to ensure smooth operation even in challenging oceanic conditions.

  • Symbolism Behind Its Name - The vessel is named after the Tara-Tarini hill shrine in Odisha, which has historically been a place of reverence for sailors seeking divine protection during voyages. In Sanskrit, ‘Tarini’ translates to both ‘boat’ and ‘saviour’, symbolizing safety and guidance for seafarers.

About Navika Sagar Parikrama II

The Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition is a historic circumnavigation mission undertaken by an all-women crew of the Indian Navy. The journey was flagged off from Goa on October 2, 2024, by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff. This mission aims to promote women’s empowerment in maritime operations while testing the endurance of both the crew and the vessel.

Mission Highlights

Total Distance Covered - The expedition is designed to span 23,400 nautical miles (approximately 43,300 km) over a period of eight months.

Major Oceans and Capes Crossed - The vessel is sailing across three major oceans—the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans—while navigating past three of the world’s most significant capes.

Key International Stopovers

  • Fremantle, Australia – The first major international halt, allowing crew members to resupply and conduct vessel maintenance.

  • Lyttelton, New Zealand – A critical stop for evaluating weather conditions and testing the ship’s performance.

  • Port Stanley, Falkland Islands (UK) – A significant checkpoint before the vessel entered the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Cape Town, South Africa – The final international destination before the journey back to India.

Final Leg Of Expedition

Following its Cape Town stop, INSV Tarini will embark on its homeward journey back to India. The mission is scheduled to conclude in May 2025, when the vessel will return to Goa, completing its circumnavigation of the globe.

This historic expedition is not just a test of naval capability but also a celebration of India's growing influence in maritime exploration. It underscores the resilience, skill, and determination of the Indian Navy’s sailors, particularly the women officers leading the voyage. The mission is expected to inspire future generations to pursue careers in maritime defense and exploration.
