Description

The Indian Parliament recently passed a bill to establish Tribhuvan Sahkari University in Anand, Gujarat. This institution is named in honor of Tribhuvandas Patel, a key figure in India's cooperative movement and the driving force behind the foundation of Amul. His efforts not only transformed the dairy industry in India but also empowered rural farmers through cooperative structures.

About Tribhuvandas Patel

Early Life and Inspiration

Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel was born in 1903 into a farming family in Gujarat. His early years were marked by a deep-rooted connection to the rural communities of India, which later influenced his dedication to improving the lives of farmers. He was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of self-reliance, community service, and non-violence.

As a staunch follower of Gandhi, Patel actively participated in various social reform movements, including campaigns against untouchability, alcoholism, and rural poverty. He was committed to uplifting marginalized communities and ensuring their economic and social empowerment.

Role In India Freedom Struggle

Tribhuvandas Patel was actively involved in India’s struggle for independence. He took part in several civil disobedience movements led by Gandhi and was imprisoned multiple times for his participation.

  • 1930 He was jailed in Nasik for his role in the Salt Satyagraha, a key movement against British colonial rule.

  • 1930 (Later) – He was imprisoned again in Visapur, where he made a lifelong commitment to serving the masses and dedicating his efforts to rural development.

His experiences during the independence movement further strengthened his resolve to create sustainable economic models that would benefit common people, particularly farmers.

Pioneering Cooperative Movement In India

In 1946, inspired by the guidance of Morarji Desai and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Tribhuvandas Patel founded the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. (KDCMPUL). This was a significant step in the fight against the exploitation of dairy farmers by private companies, particularly Polson Dairy, which had a monopoly in the region.

His vision was to create a cooperative structure where farmers collectively owned and controlled dairy production. The model he established ensured that:

  • Farmers received fair prices for their milk.

  • Village-level cooperatives were formed, serving as the foundation for the larger cooperative network.

  • Membership was open to all milk producers, regardless of caste, creed, or community, promoting social unity and economic equality.

Collaboration With Dr. Verghese Kurien & White Revolution

Understanding the need for professional expertise, Patel invited Dr. Verghese Kurien to KDCMPUL. Kurien’s expertise in dairy technology and management later led to the White Revolution in India, making the country the world’s largest producer of milk.

With Patel’s leadership and Kurien’s technical knowledge, Amul was established, becoming a symbol of India’s dairy self-sufficiency. Patel played a key role in founding institutions like:

  • Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – The apex body responsible for marketing Amul products.

  • National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) – Created to support dairy development across India.

  • Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) – Set up to train future leaders in cooperative management and rural development.

Social Leadership And Contributions

Beyond the dairy sector, Patel was deeply involved in social service and community development. He served as the President of Harijan Sevak Samiti from 1948 to 1983, working to eliminate untouchability and improve the conditions of marginalized communities. His leadership extended beyond economic reforms to include social justice initiatives.

Recognitions And Awards

Tribhuvandas Patel’s extraordinary contributions earned him numerous accolades:

  • Ramon Magsaysay Award (1963) – Recognized for community leadership and his pioneering role in the cooperative movement.

  • Padma Bhushan (1964) – Conferred by the Government of India for his outstanding contributions to social service.

Legacy And Impact

Patel’s cooperative model has empowered millions of farmers in India and continues to serve as an inspiration for cooperative movements globally. His vision not only transformed India’s dairy industry but also revolutionized rural economic development, proving that collective action and self-sufficiency can uplift entire communities.

His legacy lives on through institutions like Amul, GCMMF, NDDB, and IRMA, and now with the establishment of Tribhuvan Sahkari University, his contributions to cooperative leadership and rural development will continue to inspire future generations.
