The Indian government is preparing to introduce “Sahkar Taxi,” a cooperative-driven transport service aimed at providing a competitive alternative to major app-based cab services like Ola and Uber. Announced by Union Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, the initiative focuses on prioritizing drivers’ welfare over corporate profits. The project will cover multiple transport modes, including two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis across India.

India’s ride-hailing industry has witnessed rapid growth, with Ola and Uber dominating the market. However, these platforms are struggling to meet increasing consumer demands due to vehicle shortages and high ownership costs. Unlike traditional platforms, Sahkar Taxi will follow a cooperative structure, allowing drivers to retain full ownership of their earnings. By eliminating the need to share revenue with large corporations, the initiative seeks to financially strengthen drivers. The service will also feature a cooperative insurance scheme dedicated to covering driver needs.

The cooperative model of Sahkar Taxi stands in contrast to the profit-sharing mechanisms of current ride-hailing platforms.
