Description
On April 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the much-anticipated New Pamban Bridge in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. The inauguration, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, is seen as a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure journey. The new bridge, spanning 2.5 kilometres, will drastically improve connectivity between the Indian mainland and Rameshwaram Island, reducing train travel time from 25-30 minutes to under five minutes.
Key Highlights Of New Pamban Bridge
This modern structure is Asia's first vertical lift railway bridge, replacing the century-old Pamban Bridge, which was decommissioned in December 2022 due to extensive corrosion. Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of ?535 crore, the bridge is designed to handle faster trains and greater traffic volumes efficiently.
Advanced Engineering And Features
Equipped with an advanced electromechanical system, the bridge allows smooth navigation for ships and boats. The vertical lift span can be raised within five minutes and is controlled by a single operator. Trains can travel up to 75 km/h on the bridge, although the speed is limited to 50 km/h when passing through the liftable section for safety reasons.
Operational Challenges
Despite its modern features, the bridge's lift operation is dependent on weather conditions. It cannot be lifted if wind speeds exceed 58 km/h, a common scenario during the windy season between October and February, which may temporarily affect its operations.
Significance And Historical Background
The original Pamban Bridge, built in 1914, was the sole rail link to Rameswaram until a road bridge was added in 1988. The new bridge will re-establish vital rail connectivity, benefiting both the local population and the large number of pilgrims visiting the island.
Upcoming Developments
Alongside the inauguration, a new Tambaram-Rameswaram train service will be flagged off. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a public gathering in Rameswaram. Additionally, the Rameswaram railway station is undergoing redevelopment, with completion expected by September 2025.
