Efforts are underway to restore Vikramshila, another historic centre of learning in Bihar, following the establishment of Nalanda University a decade ago. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is developing the ancient site to promote tourism. Additionally, the Bihar government has allocated 202.14 acres in Antichak village, Bhagalpur, for setting up a Central University at the historic location. Although the project received central approval in 2015 with an initial budget of Rupees 500 crore, land acquisition challenges have delayed progress.
About Vikramshila University
Location & Founding:
Vikramshila University was located in Bhagalpur, Bihar, along the banks of the Ganges River, making it a significant learning hub in eastern India. It was founded in the late 8th or early 9th century AD by King Dharmapala of the Pala Dynasty to address the declining academic standards of Nalanda University.
Historical Significance:
Recognized as a major centre for Tantric and Vajrayana Buddhism, it played a crucial role in propagating these traditions.
The university specialized in esoteric and occult studies, differentiating it from Nalanda, which had a broader curriculum.
It had a strong influence over Nalanda during Dharmapala’s reign, highlighting its administrative and scholarly prominence.
With over 1,000 students and 100 teachers, it attracted scholars from across India and other regions.
Among its renowned alumni was Atisa Dipankara, who was instrumental in spreading Buddhism in Tibet.
Architectural & Academic Features:
The university's central stupa was surrounded by 208 meditation cells for student-monks.
It housed a library with an advanced cooling system, using water channels to protect manuscripts.
The curriculum was diverse, covering subjects like theology, philosophy, grammar, metaphysics, logic, and tantric studies.
The institution was led by a Kulpati (Mahasthavir), responsible for its administration and academic excellence.
Decline & Destruction
Like Nalanda, Vikramshila University was destroyed in 1203 AD by Muhammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khalji during his invasion, marking the end of its legacy.
With ongoing restoration efforts, Vikramshila is poised to regain its historical prominence as an educational and cultural landmark.
