Description
A group of twenty-two members belonging to the Hakki Pikki tribal community from Channagiri taluk, Davangere, Karnataka, has been penalized and asked to leave Gabon due to recent policy modifications introduced by the government of the African nation.
About Hakki Pikki Tribe
The Hakki Pikki community, whose name translates to “bird catchers” in Kannada (Hakki means bird, and Pikki means catchers), is a semi-nomadic tribal group historically engaged in bird hunting.
Geographical Distribution
Recognized as one of the major tribal communities in Karnataka.
Primarily settled in Davangere, Mysuru, Kolar, Hassan, and Shivamogga districts.
Also found in other western and southern states of India, mainly residing in forest regions.
As per the 2011 Census, their population in Karnataka stood at 11,892.
Listed as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in India.
Language
The tribe originally spoke Vaagri, which has been classified as an endangered language by UNESCO.
Many members of the community are multilingual, speaking Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi.
Occupation & Economic Activities
Initially, their livelihood revolved around hunting and bird catching.
Due to the enforcement of wildlife protection laws, they shifted to alternative occupations such as selling spices, flowers, Ayurvedic medicines, and herbal oils.
They also engaged in agricultural labor and sharpening tools while traveling from town to town.
Known for their expertise in indigenous medicine, they developed a plant- and herb-based medicinal system due to their long-standing habitation in dense forests.
In recent years, the tribe has expanded its trade internationally, particularly in Africa, where their traditional herbal remedies serve as affordable alternatives to Western medicine.
Cultural Traditions & Social Structure
The Hakki Pikki community follows Hindu traditions and celebrates major Hindu festivals.
Their society is clan-based, with strict adherence to endogamy within their clan.
Marriage customs include a preference for cross-cousin unions.
Unlike conventional patriarchal norms, they have a matriarchal structure, wherein the groom provides a dowry to the bride’s family.
A distinctive cultural practice requires the eldest son in a family to keep his hair uncut, making him easily identifiable within the community.
The Hakki Pikki tribe, once reliant on hunting, has evolved into a community recognized for its traditional medicine and herbal trade, expanding its reach beyond India. However, recent policy shifts in Gabon have led to the expulsion of several tribe members, highlighting the challenges faced by indigenous communities in foreign trade markets.
