Description

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently introduced two advanced 32-bit microprocessors, Vikram 3201 and Kalpana 3201, marking a significant step forward in India's indigenous technological capabilities for space applications. These processors were developed in collaboration with the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Chandigarh.

Background Of Microprocessor Development

ISRO has been at the forefront of developing microprocessors for its space programs. The Vikram 1601, a 16-bit microprocessor, has been in operation since 2009. The new Vikram 3201 is an advanced, fully indigenous 32-bit processor, built using 180nm CMOS technology at SCL. This initiative aligns with India’s “Make in India” vision, emphasizing self-sufficiency in critical technology sectors.

Vikram 3201 Microprocessor

Vikram 3201 is India’s first 32-bit microprocessor designed specifically for the challenging conditions of space. It supports floating-point computations and is highly compatible with high-level languages, especially Ada. The processor’s in-house developed software tools further enhance its performance and adaptability for space missions.

Kalpana 3201 Microprocessor

Kalpana 3201 is based on the SPARC V8 architecture and follows a Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) design. This microprocessor is open-source software compatible, allowing it to integrate with various development tools and be used across diverse space applications.

Testing And Validation

The Vikram 3201 microprocessor has been rigorously tested, including validation in the Mission Management Computer during the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM-4) mission. The successful validation highlights the processor’s reliability for future space missions.

Additional Technological Developments

In addition to the Vikram and Kalpana processors, ISRO and SCL have developed several other critical components, such as a Reconfigurable Data Acquisition System and a Multi-Channel Low Drop-out Regulator Integrated Circuit. These innovations play a key role in the miniaturization of avionics systems for space missions.

Future Prospects

The development of these microprocessors signifies a major milestone in India's space technology advancements. It also supports the country’s push for self-reliance, or Atmanirbharata, in high-reliability microprocessors. This breakthrough will enhance the capabilities of India’s future space missions and open new doors for technological innovations in the space sector.
