Researchers have recently confirmed the identification of a new plant species, Uniyala keralensis, in the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, located in Kerala. This discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the species was first collected 27 years ago, it was only officially classified recently, underscoring the ongoing importance of botanical research.
Taxonomy And Classification
Uniyala keralensis is part of the Asteraceae family and was previously misidentified as Vernonia multibracteata. After detailed studies, the genus Uniyala was created, separating it from Vernonia. This classification was finalized through thorough comparisons with herbarium specimens and scientific analysis.
Physical Characteristics
This new species is a shrub that typically reaches heights between one and three meters. It produces light purple flowers, which bloom from August through April. The leaves are notably larger compared to similar species, with longer petioles and fewer lateral veins, characteristics that help in its identification.
Habitat And Distribution
Uniyala keralensis is native to the western slopes of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, thriving in open areas at elevations between 700 and 1,400 meters. The species is distributed across nearly 250 square kilometers, with an estimated population of around 5,000 individuals, spread over four subpopulations.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorized Uniyala keralensis as "Data Deficient" (DD). This designation reflects the lack of sufficient information to determine the plant’s risk of extinction. Ongoing research is crucial to better understand its ecological requirements and conservation needs.
