Description

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has recommended the establishment of a unified and independent drug regulator for AYUSH-related drug standards. This proposal aims to streamline and improve the efficiency of standardisation processes in line with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940.

Creation Of An Independent Drug Regulatory Body

The committee suggests the formation of an independent body responsible for overseeing AYUSH drug standards. This body would collaborate with existing institutions such as the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy and the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences to ensure consistency in the quality and effectiveness of AYUSH drugs.

Greater Stakeholder Engagement

A significant recommendation is to involve various stakeholders in the development of pharmacopoeial standards. By incorporating diverse viewpoints, this approach aims to improve the overall quality of AYUSH products and foster broader industry participation in setting standards.

Widening Reach Of AYUSH Initiatives

The committee has noted that AYUSH outreach programs, including the Arogya Fair and Ayurveda Parv, are currently limited in scope across India's large geographic expanse. It recommends expanding these initiatives to cover 50% of states in the coming year to increase public engagement with AYUSH practices.

Campaigns For Awareness And Education

The committee highlights the importance of targeted communication strategies to raise awareness of AYUSH systems, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) scheme should focus on promoting the preventive and therapeutic benefits of AYUSH practices to broader populations.

International Collaboration And Promotion

To bolster AYUSH's global presence, the committee advocates for collaboration with developed nations to promote AYUSH among both the Indian diaspora and local populations abroad. The Ministry is encouraged to implement marketing campaigns that promote AYUSH systems and healthcare travel to India.

Investment In Research And Development

The committee underscores the need for increased research and development to substantiate the safety, efficacy, and quality control of AYUSH drugs. By gathering data on these aspects, the credibility of AYUSH therapies will be strengthened, fostering greater public trust in these traditional medical systems.

Human Resource Development In AYUSH

The committee also recommends the development of a skilled workforce in the AYUSH sector. The Ministry is advised to devise strategies for human resource management, ensuring that there are well-trained professionals available to support the growth and delivery of AYUSH services.

Collaboration With World Health Organization (WHO)

The committee supports greater cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO), especially in light of the establishment of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar. Strengthening this partnership can accelerate global acceptance of AYUSH systems, contributing to the growth and recognition of traditional medicine worldwide.
