Punjab has recently emerged as a front-runner in utilizing the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) scheme, effectively utilizing its allocated Rupees 4,713 crore and securing an additional Rupees 2,337 crore from the Centre.

Know About Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)

Launched in July 2020, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund is a government initiative designed to provide medium- to long-term financing for agricultural infrastructure development, particularly post-harvest. The scheme’s main objective is to reduce post-harvest losses by improving storage and processing facilities in rural areas.

Scope And Eligibility Of AIF

Initially focused on primary post-harvest management, the scope of the AIF has expanded to include integrated processing at the secondary level. Farmers can apply for funding to enhance facilities for grading, waxing, packaging, and the production of value-added products such as juices and jams.

The scheme is open to a variety of stakeholders, including farmers, agripreneurs, cooperative societies, farmer producer organizations, start-ups, and public-private partnerships, making it accessible for a wide range of projects.

Punjab’s Success In AIF Implementation

By February 2025, Punjab had approved 21,740 projects, leading the country in terms of the number of sanctioned projects. This milestone was achieved more than a year ahead of the official deadline in March 2026. While other states, such as Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, are also progressing well, Punjab remains the leader in implementing the AIF scheme.

Types Of Projects Funded

The AIF scheme supports a diverse range of agricultural projects, including but not limited to cashew processing units, oil extraction plants, flour mills, cold storage facilities, and solar-powered installations. This broad variety of projects reflects the scheme’s flexibility in addressing the diverse needs of the agriculture sector.

Financial Details Of AIF Scheme

Under the AIF scheme, eligible loans receive a 3% interest subvention, with the maximum interest rate capped at 9% for loans up to Rupees 2 crore. The repayment period for these loans extends up to seven years. Beneficiaries can also access additional subsidies from both state and central governments, further easing financial access.

Impact On Farmers And Rural Economy

Approximately 71% of the AIF beneficiaries are farmers, with 67% of the approved projects costing less than Rupees 25 lakh. This focus on smaller-scale projects has significantly benefitted grassroots communities, helping to improve local economies and enhance rural livelihoods. The scheme has been instrumental in uplifting agriculture-related businesses and fostering economic growth in rural areas.
