The Government of India has given its approval for the construction of a 12.9 km ropeway connecting Sonprayag to Kedarnath as part of the National Ropeways Development Programme, also known as Parvatmala Pariyojana. This project aims to provide all-weather connectivity to the Kedarnath Temple, reducing travel time and promoting tourism and employment opportunities in the region.

Key Features

• Approval & Budget - The project has been sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), with a budget of Rupees 4,081.28 crore.

• Development Model - The project will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) framework.

• Technology - The ropeway will utilize a Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) system, a modern and efficient technology.

• Passenger Capacity - The system is designed to carry 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, with a total capacity of 18,000 passengers daily.

• Time Reduction - The ropeway will shorten the travel time from the 8-9 hour trek to just 36 minutes.

About Kedarnath Temple

• Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,968 feet) in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.

• The temple is open for around 6-7 months each year, from April-May to October-November.

• It attracts approximately 20 lakh pilgrims annually during the season.
