Description

Amazon has recently introduced a prototype of its in-house developed quantum computing chip, named Ocelot.

About Ocelot Chip

The Ocelot chip is a cutting-edge nine-qubit quantum processor created entirely by Amazon. It was developed by the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team at the AWS Center for Quantum Computing in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Unlike traditional quantum chips, the Ocelot chip features a unique design that incorporates error correction directly into the architecture. This design utilizes a special kind of qubit known as the "cat qubit," inspired by Schrödinger’s famous cat paradox. The cat qubit has the ability to naturally suppress certain types of errors, which decreases the need for additional quantum error correction resources.

The Ocelot chip is specifically engineered to enhance Amazon’s ability to create efficient hardware systems for quantum computing.

Key Components Of Ocelot Chip

The chip is made up of two integrated silicon microchips, each measuring approximately one square centimeter, stacked on top of each other with electrical connections between them. It contains 14 core components, including:

  • Five data qubits (the cat qubits), which store quantum states for computations.

  • Five buffer circuits, which help stabilize the data qubits.

  • Four additional qubits dedicated to detecting errors in the data qubits.

The cat qubits utilize oscillators, which generate a consistent electrical signal, ensuring steady timing for the quantum calculations.
