The Speaker of the Lok Sabha recently addressed members of the Banjara community during the 286th birth anniversary celebration of Sant Sewalal Maharaja at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.
About Banjara Community
The Banjara community is composed of various groups spread across India, with significant populations in the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Historically nomadic, these groups have now largely settled in specific areas known as Tandas, abandoning their itinerant lifestyle.
Language And Culture
The Banjara people speak Gor Boli, also referred to as Lambadi, which is part of the Indo-Aryan language family. Notably, Lambadi does not have a written script. The majority of the Banjara people practice Hinduism, often blending it with their indigenous animistic beliefs.
The community celebrates the Teej festival during the month of Shravan (August), where unmarried girls pray for a good husband. Traditional dance forms like the Fire Dance and Chariare are common cultural expressions. Tattoos also hold cultural significance, representing personal identity, family connections, and style.

Sant Sewalal Maharaja is revered as both a social reformer and a spiritual leader for the Banjara community. He is well known for his travels across India with his Ladeniya Troup, where he worked to uplift forest dwellers and nomadic tribes. Sant Sewalal's deep knowledge of Ayurveda and Naturopathy helped him dispel myths and superstitions within the tribal communities, leaving a lasting impact on their way of life.
