Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander has successfully completed its descent and landed on the Moon's Mare Crisium region after a challenging powered descent.

About Blue Ghost Mission

Developed by Firefly Aerospace, the Blue Ghost lander is carrying 10 NASA payloads as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which aims to foster lunar exploration by encouraging private sector involvement and competition.

The mission's primary goal is to enhance scientific knowledge of the lunar environment. Among its key payloads is the Lunar PlanetVac (LPV), a vacuum system designed to collect lunar soil samples, along with a drill capable of measuring temperatures at depths of up to 10 feet (3 meters) below the surface.

Mission Objectives

• Thermal Studies - The lander will study heat flow from the Moon’s interior, aiding in understanding the Moon's thermal evolution over time.

• Landing Techniques - It will examine plume-surface interactions to refine landing strategies, focusing on how the engine's exhaust affects the lunar surface.

• Geophysical Investigations - The lander will collect data on the Moon’s magnetic and electric fields, providing valuable information on its geological history.

• Duration - The mission is expected to last around 14 Earth days, which corresponds to one full lunar day, during which it will conduct scientific research and demonstrate new technologies.
