Forest authorities have recently imposed restrictions on access along a 5-km stretch from Gokharakuda to Bateswar, near the Rushikulya river mouth in Ganjam district, to safeguard Olive Ridley turtle eggs.

About Rushikulya River

The Rushikulya River is one of the major rivers in Odisha, flowing through the districts of Kandhamal, Ganjam, and Boudh.

Course

The river originates from the Daringbadi hills in the Eastern Ghats, situated at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters. The Rushikulya flows for about 165 kilometers before emptying into the Bay of Bengal near the town of Ganjam. Unlike many other rivers in the region, the Rushikulya does not create a delta at its mouth, but directly discharges into the Bay of Bengal. The river basin spans an area of approximately 7500 sq.km.

Tributaries

Rushikulya is fed by several tributaries, including the Baghua, Dhanei, and Badanadi.

Olive Ridley Turtle Nesting Site (Rushikulya Beach)

One of the key natural highlights near the river is the Olive Ridley Turtle nesting site, located at the mouth of the river where it meets the Bay of Bengal. From January to March each year, thousands of Olive Ridley turtles arrive at the shore to lay their eggs in a breathtaking natural event known as Arribada, where massive numbers of turtles nest simultaneously.
