The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that there will be no changes to the subjects currently offered for the Class 10 board examinations. This statement comes in response to concerns about the exclusion of Punjabi (code 004) from the newly proposed draft policy.
CBSE’s Controller of Examinations, Sanyam Bhardwaj, emphasized that the list of subjects in the draft is only indicative and that all subjects presently available to students will continue to be part of the two-board examination system.
The clarification follows criticism after the draft policy did not include Punjabi as one of the listed second languages, while other regional languages were. In the draft, languages such as Spanish, German, Tangkhul, and Japanese were listed under the regional/foreign language group, but Punjabi, a widely spoken language in India, was notably absent. The letter expressing the concern pointed out that over one lakh students in CBSE-affiliated schools in Punjab study Punjabi. The statement stressed the importance of learning and speaking one's mother tongue for academic and personal development.
The draft policy, which is open for feedback, has been made available on the CBSE website for comments from stakeholders including schools, teachers, parents, and students.
Additionally, the Board released draft guidelines for the upcoming two-board exam system for Class 10 students. Under the new system, students will have the option to take the exam once or attempt both sessions. If they choose the second session, they can opt out of subjects or papers they don’t wish to retake. According to the proposed dates for CBSE 2026, the first phase of the Class 10 exams will take place from February 17 to March 6, while the second phase will be held from May 5 to May 20. The exam period has been reduced to 16-18 days, significantly shorter than the current 32-day duration.
