The Indian Navy has recently handed over Ex INS Guldar, a decommissioned Landing Ship Tank (Medium), to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Limited (MTDC). This marks a significant initiative in India to repurpose a retired naval vessel into an underwater museum and artificial reef. The handover took place in Karwar, where MTDC took over the ship on an ‘as is where is’ basis. The project aims to boost marine conservation efforts while creating new opportunities for local communities.
About Ex INS Guldar
Ex INS Guldar was constructed in Poland and was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 30, 1985. The ship served in the Eastern Naval Command until 1995 and then in the Andaman and Nicobar Command until its decommissioning on January 12, 2024. Over its 39 years of service, it participated in several operations, including Op Aman and Op Pawan, and conducted more than 490 beaching operations.
Environmental And Economic Benefits
The project focuses on supporting marine conservation by creating artificial reefs from scuttled decommissioned ships, which provide shelter and promote thriving ecosystems. This initiative also aims to create livelihood opportunities for local communities through underwater tourism, further enhancing the region's economy.
Diving Training Opportunities
In addition to its tourism and conservation benefits, the project will provide diving training opportunities for the Indian Navy at the scuttled site. This collaboration with MTDC will improve the Navy's operational training while promoting marine tourism in the area.
Other Marine Museums In India
India has already converted other naval vessels into museums, contributing to the country’s maritime heritage. For instance, INS Kursura in Vishakhapatnam has been turned into an underwater museum, and INS Vikrant operated as a museum before being recommissioned in 2022. Additionally, INS Cuddalore has also been transformed into an underwater museum, further enriching India’s maritime history.
