On February 24, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attended Jhumoir Binandini 2025, the largest Jhumur event ever held, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Assam’s tea industry. The event will take place at Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium and aims to celebrate the rich cultural legacy of the tea garden community and its significant contribution to Assam’s economy.
Tea Garden Community In Assam
The tea garden community is made up of various ethnic groups who migrated to Assam from Central India in the 19th century to work in the tea gardens. Many of these migrants faced harsh, exploitative working conditions and low wages. Despite these challenges, their descendants are now an integral part of Assam's population, residing mainly in districts like Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar. Though these communities are categorized as Other Backward Classes (OBC), they continue to advocate for recognition as Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Origins Of Jhumur Dance
Jhumur dance, originating from the Sadan ethnolinguistic group of the Chotanagpur region, is a cultural practice brought to Assam by tea garden workers. The dance is a vital part of tea garden festivals, especially during Tushu Puja and Karam Puja, which mark the harvest season. Over time, the dance has absorbed Assamese influences while retaining its distinct traditions.

Typically performed by women, Jhumur dance involves singing accompanied by men playing traditional instruments like the madal and dhol. Dancers wear colorful attire, with red and white sarees being common among the women.
