The Government of India has launched the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA) initiative, designed to create and update land records in urban and semi-urban regions. The programme was officially inaugurated by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Madhya Pradesh. NAKSHA will cover 152 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) spread across 26 states and three Union Territories, with a total funding of Rupees 194 crore from the central government.
Key Objectives Of NAKSHA
The main aim of NAKSHA is to ensure accurate land ownership records.
It seeks to improve the ease of living for citizens and enhance urban planning efforts.
The programme also focuses on minimizing land-related disputes.
By creating trustworthy land records, it aims to boost transparency and efficiency in property administration.
Technological Approach
NAKSHA leverages cutting-edge technology for land surveys.
Drones will be utilized for aerial surveys, providing orthorectified imagery.
The Survey of India will manage the technical aspects of these aerial surveys.
The Madhya Pradesh State Electronic Development Corporation (MPSEDC) will develop a comprehensive web-GIS platform for data management.
Implementation
States and Union Territories will conduct ground surveys and validate the aerial data through ground truthing.
The outcome will be the publication of urban and semi-urban land records, which will be issued as registration cards to property owners.
Advantages Of NAKSHA
NAKSHA will improve urban planning by offering accurate land usage data.
It will promote sustainable development by ensuring better land management.
The programme will create a transparent system for property ownership, reducing disputes and fostering trust among citizens.
Historical Context
NAKSHA builds upon the earlier Svamitva scheme, which focused on validating land ownership in rural areas.
While Svamitva concentrated on rural regions, NAKSHA extends the initiative to urban and semi-urban areas, showcasing the government’s commitment to modernizing land record systems across India.
