Recent archaeological findings in Kankal village, Vikarabad district, have uncovered three Kannada inscriptions from the Kalyana Chalukya period. These inscriptions date to the reign of Emperor Someswara III Bhulokamalladeva, between 1129 and 1132 CE, and document important events such as temple construction and donations.
Kalyana Chalukya Dynasty: Historical Context
The Kalyana Chalukyas, who ruled the Deccan region of India from the 6th to the 12th century, rose to prominence after initially serving as feudatories under the Rashtrakuta Empire. Their capital was Kalyani, in present-day Karnataka. The dynasty is renowned for its contributions to art, architecture, and literature, leaving a lasting legacy.

The three inscriptions discovered in Kankal are dated December 25, 1129, October 5, 1130, and January 8, 1132. The first inscription describes the construction of the Bijjeswara temple and records a land donation by a local ruler. The second and third inscriptions document further donations, highlighting the community's support for temple-building efforts. Following his death, internal rebellions and challenges from feudatories further weakened the Kalyana Chalukyas, eventually leading to the dissolution of their empire.
