India ranked 96th out of 180 countries in the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), according to a report by Transparency International.
About Corruption Perceptions Index
The CPI is a global corruption ranking, first published by the non-governmental organization Transparency International in 1995. It is the most widely referenced corruption index globally.
The index assesses countries based on the perceived levels of corruption in their public sector, determined through expert evaluations and surveys. The CPI defines corruption as the "abuse of entrusted power for private gain." It uses a scale ranging from 0 to 100, where 0 indicates high corruption and 100 represents a very clean public sector.
The score for each country is calculated using data from at least three sources chosen from 13 different corruption assessments, including reports from organizations like the World Bank and the World Economic Forum.
Key Highlights From 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index
Denmark tops the list, followed by Finland and Singapore, as the least corrupt countries.
This year’s CPI report draws attention to the relationship between climate action and corruption, specifically focusing on climate financing.
India received a CPI score of 38 in 2024, a slight decline from 39 in 2023 and 40 in 2022.
The average CPI score in the Asia-Pacific region has dropped by one point to 44, reflecting ongoing challenges in fulfilling anti-corruption commitments.
The report underscores that corruption significantly hampers development, contributing to deteriorating democracy, instability, and human rights violations.
