India is set to launch its first manned submersible, Matsya 6000, designed to explore depths of up to 6,000 meters in the ocean by 2026, as announced by the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
About Matsya 6000
Matsya 6000 is a state-of-the-art deep-sea submersible built for ocean exploration, particularly in areas like deep-sea mining and biodiversity research. It was developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) as part of the Samudrayaan Mission, and it is capable of reaching depths of 6,000 meters.
Key Features
The submersible is outfitted with advanced technologies, including sophisticated life support systems, navigation tools, robotic arms for sample collection, and high-definition imaging systems.
It features a personnel sphere made of titanium alloy with a diameter of 2.1 meters, designed to safely transport people to depths of 6,000 meters. The integration of this sphere is a collaborative effort with ISRO.
Matsya 6000 is equipped with various subsystems to manage buoyancy for descent and ascent, as well as power and control systems. It also includes maneuvering propellers, subsea manipulators, navigation and positioning devices, communication systems for voice and data, onboard batteries for energy storage, and emergency support systems.
The submersible is designed for continuous operation at 6,000 meters for up to 12 hours and can endure an emergency situation for up to 96 hours, facilitating deep-water observation and exploration.
Samudrayaan Mission
This mission marks India’s first manned venture into deep-ocean exploration. The goal is to develop a self-propelled submersible that can carry three individuals to a depth of 6,000 meters, equipped with scientific sensors and tools for exploring the ocean floor.
The mission’s objectives include studying deep-ocean resources and assessing marine biodiversity. It is structured to ensure that the ecosystem remains undisturbed, as the submersible is used purely for exploration purposes.
Matsya 6000 is a key part of the larger Deep Ocean Mission, which aligns with India’s Blue Economy policy.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is overseeing the project.
This groundbreaking initiative will contribute significantly to India's understanding of deep-sea ecosystems and resources.
