Description
A pair of rare, endangered white-winged ducks, known as Deo Hanh, were recently spotted in Dihing Patkai National Park by conservationists and forest officials.
About White-Winged Duck
The White-Winged Duck, scientifically called Asarcornis scutulata, is a large and critically endangered species of duck found in freshwater wetlands and dense tropical forests across South and Southeast Asia.
In Assamese, it is referred to as Deo Hans or the "spirit duck" due to its eerie call. This species is considered one of the most endangered waterfowl globally.
Distribution
The White-Winged Duck prefers dense tropical and subtropical forests, especially near slow-moving rivers, swamps, and wetlands. It is found across various countries including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia (Sumatra), and Malaysia.
In India, notable habitats include Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Kaziranga National Park, and wetlands in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Characteristics
The bird has a black body with a white head that is heavily spotted with black, as well as prominent white patches on its wings and red or orange eyes.
It typically measures around 81 cm in length.
The male is generally larger, heavier, and has more glossy plumage than the female.
Being crepuscular, the White-Winged Duck is most active during dawn and dusk, and its diet is largely omnivorous.
