Government Of India Launched Green Credit Programme And Ecomark Scheme To Promote Environmental Sustainability

Description

The Green Credit Programme (GCP) and the Ecomark Scheme are two environmental initiatives introduced by the Government of India in October 2023. These programs aim to foster environmental sustainability and encourage eco-friendly practices across individuals, communities, and businesses. While the GCP incentivizes voluntary environmental actions, the Ecomark Scheme focuses on endorsing eco-friendly products.

Current Progress Of Green Credit Programme (GCP)

Seventeen states have designated a total of 57,700 hectares of degraded forest land for tree plantation activities. Madhya Pradesh leads with 15,200 hectares, followed by Andhra Pradesh (11,361 hectares), Gujarat (6,760 hectares), Jharkhand (5,648 hectares), Tamil Nadu (4,708 hectares), and Bihar (4,108 hectares).

About Green Credit Programme

The GCP is a market-driven approach designed to reward voluntary environmental actions. It encourages individuals and businesses to engage in tree planting and ecological restoration on degraded lands. Participants can earn Green Credits, which can be traded or used to meet compensatory afforestation requirements. This program is managed by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), with support from an inter-ministerial Steering Committee.

Goals Of Green Credit Programme

The main goals of the GCP are to encourage afforestation, water conservation, and the restoration of degraded lands. The program aims to involve diverse stakeholders, including private-sector industries, in environmental actions and provides a digital platform to facilitate the exchange of Green Credits.

About Ecomark Scheme

The Ecomark Scheme promotes eco-friendly products by certifying and labeling them. This updated version of the scheme replaces the previous Ecomark notification and ensures that products meet environmental criteria. The scheme is overseen by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Objectives Of Ecomark Scheme

The Ecomark Scheme encourages consumers to make eco-conscious decisions by identifying products that have minimal environmental impact. The scheme also raises awareness about environmental issues and motivates manufacturers to adopt more sustainable production practices. A key feature of the scheme is accurate labeling to prevent misleading claims about the environmental attributes of products.

Impact On Sustainable Practices

Both the GCP and the Ecomark Scheme are key steps in India's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. These initiatives align with global sustainability objectives and aim to promote eco-friendly behavior among both businesses and individuals. The programs are expected to inspire a broader culture of environmental responsibility across India.
