The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has raised significant concerns over the Morand-Ganjal Irrigation Project in Madhya Pradesh, as it poses a threat to vital tiger habitats and disrupts ecological corridors connecting the Satpura and Melghat Tiger Reserves. The NTCA has urged the authorities to consider alternative locations for the project to ensure a balance between development and wildlife conservation.
Project Overview
The Morand-Ganjal Irrigation Project is designed to enhance irrigation in 211 villages across the districts of Hoshangabad, Betul, Harda, and Khandwa. Initially proposed in 1972, the project gained government approval in 2017. It involves the construction of dams on the Morand and Ganjal rivers, which will submerge over 2,250 hectares of forest land.
Impact On Tiger Habitats
The NTCA's evaluation highlights that the project site is located within a critical tiger habitat. The flooding of forested areas will disrupt the movement of tigers between the Satpura and Melghat reserves, hindering genetic exchange and population stability. This disruption could have long-term negative effects on the viability of tiger populations and the broader wildlife community.
Recovery Of Tiger Populations
Both the Satpura and Melghat Tiger Reserves are currently seeing positive signs of recovery, thanks to successful village relocations. However, the loss of the ecological corridor could undermine the progress made in increasing tiger numbers, potentially reversing the recovery efforts.
Socio-Economic Concerns
The project will also displace over 600 members of the Korku tribal community, leading to the loss of their livelihoods. The NTCA points out that the submerged areas are not only crucial for tigers but also support a wide range of wildlife and biodiversity.
NTCA Recommendations
The NTCA has strongly recommended exploring alternative sites for the irrigation project that are less ecologically sensitive. It emphasizes the need to strike a balance between developmental objectives and the conservation of critical wildlife habitats. The authority urges that preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological integrity should be prioritized in the decision-making process.
