Russia has reportedly offered the R-37M missile, one of the most advanced air-to-air missiles, to India.
About R-37M Missile
The R-37M, also known by its NATO designation AA-13 Axehead, is a long-range air-to-air missile developed by Russia. It is designed to target enemy fighter jets and drones beyond visual range (BVR).
An upgraded version of the earlier R-33 missile, the R-37M is intended for engaging high-priority targets such as AWACS, tanker aircraft, and other support platforms, allowing the launching aircraft to remain out of reach of enemy fighters.
Key Features
Weight - Approximately 510 kilograms, with a length exceeding 4 meters, and a warhead weighing 60 kilograms.
Guidance - A combination of inertial navigation, active radar homing, and semi-active radar for terminal guidance.
Range - The missile has an impressive range of 300 to 400 kilometers, making it one of the longest-range air-to-air missiles in operation.
Speed - Capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 6, the missile can intercept fast-moving targets at hypersonic speeds.
Rocket Booster - It features a jettisonable booster to help it achieve its long-range capability.
