Around 12 families from the Bhil community have raised concerns that the Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) is attempting to demolish their homes and forcibly relocate them from land they have inhabited for generations.
About Bhil Tribe
The Bhils are one of the oldest and largest tribal communities in India, widely distributed across several regions. The term 'Bhil' is thought to be derived from the Dravidian word villu or billu, meaning "bow," reflecting their historical association with archery.
Geographic Distribution
The Bhils primarily inhabit the mountain regions of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. Additionally, smaller populations can be found in northeastern Tripura. The tribe is divided into two major sub-groups: the Central Bhils and the Eastern or Rajput Bhils.
Occupation
Agriculture is the primary occupation for the Bhils, with most of them utilizing ploughs, though some still practice the traditional slash-and-burn (jhum) method.
Language
The Bhil people speak Bhili, an Indo-Aryan language spoken across several regions where the community resides.
Cultural Beliefs
While most Bhils practice ethnic religions influenced by Hinduism, they have their own distinct traditions. They worship local deities such as Khandoba, Kanhoba, Bahiroba, and Sitalmata. Additionally, many Bhils revere the Tiger God, known as vaghdev.
Festivals
The Baneshwar Fair, held during Shivratri, is the most important festival for the Bhils. It is dedicated to Baneshwar Mahadev, another name for Lord Shiva, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm within the community.
