Description
The Government of India has upgraded its Search and Rescue Aid Tool (SARAT) to boost the efficiency of search and rescue operations. The new version, SARAT version 2, is designed to improve response times and increase success rates for operations, particularly in the Indian Ocean region.
Key Enhancements In SARAT Version 2
The upgraded version introduces several improvements. The search area computation is now based on the Last Known Position (LKP) of the object, providing more accurate definitions of the search zones. Previously, the search area was determined using the point with the minimum longitude, which was less precise.
Improved Data Visualization And Export Features
SARAT version 2 also brings enhanced data visualization capabilities. It now provides digital search areas that can be easily integrated with rescue planning maps. The tool displays the individual and average particle trajectories, along with color-coded search areas and a marker for the LKP. These features make it easier to interpret and utilize the data effectively.
Training And Capacity Building
To ensure the efficient use of the new tool, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has organized targeted training programs. A national workshop was conducted to train personnel from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), with over 60 officers participating. These training sessions are designed to help personnel effectively use SARAT in real-world operations.
Continuous Improvement Through Feedback
INCOIS actively seeks feedback from stakeholders during SAR workshops to further refine the SARAT tool. Regular lectures and demonstrations are held to ensure that personnel stay updated on its operational features. This approach contributes to better outcomes in search-and-rescue operations.
Future Enhancements For SARAT
The Ministry of Earth Sciences has outlined plans to further enhance SARAT’s accuracy. This will include improving surface current and wind predictions by incorporating more ocean observation data into circulation models. Additionally, High-Frequency (HF) radar measurements will be used to improve the precision of coastal surface current predictions.
