The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently finalized contracts worth Rs 10,147 crore to strengthen the Indian Army's firepower. These agreements involve the acquisition of advanced munitions for the domestically developed PINAKA Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The contracts have been signed with Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL), with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) tasked with providing software upgrades. This initiative is part of India’s ongoing defence modernization efforts.
Details Of Contracts
The MoD's new contracts include two distinct types of munitions:
Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) - These rockets are designed to scatter sub-munitions over a broad area, effectively blocking enemy movement, particularly targeting vehicles, mechanized forces, and troops.
High Explosive Pre-Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) - These rockets offer improved range and accuracy, allowing the Indian Army to strike further into enemy territory.
Importance For National Defence
The contracts represent a significant step forward in modernizing India’s artillery capabilities. With the addition of these advanced munitions, the Army will be able to execute precise and long-range strikes, enhancing overall firepower. This development is in line with the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, promoting self-reliance in defence.
The new rockets will be integrated into nearly 10 Pinaka regiments. While four regiments are currently in service, an additional six regiments (with 114 launchers) are being added to enhance operational capabilities.
Support For Indigenous Industry
This procurement initiative also supports India’s focus on domestic production. The MoD’s strategy encourages collaboration with private companies like Bharat Forge and Tata Group to bolster the country's manufacturing sector. By prioritizing local industries, the MoD aims not only to strengthen military preparedness but also to stimulate economic growth, particularly through the involvement of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
