Description
ISRO recently encountered a challenge in its mission to place the NVS-02 satellite in the intended orbit due to a thruster malfunction. However, the agency is exploring alternative methods to effectively use the satellite in its current elliptical orbit, contributing to the NavIC navigation system.
About NavIC
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India's own regional satellite navigation system that provides precise Position, Velocity, and Timing (PVT) services to users in India and surrounding regions, extending about 1500 km beyond the Indian subcontinent.
Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the first satellite of the NavIC system was launched in 2013. The system is made up of a constellation of 7 satellites supported by a ground network that operates round-the-clock.
Three of these satellites are positioned in geostationary orbit at 32.5°E, 83°E, and 129.5°E, while four others are in inclined geosynchronous orbits with equatorial crossings at 55°E and 111.75°E, each with an inclination of 29°.
The system is designed to offer two services: the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for civilian use and the Restricted Service (RS) for strategic purposes. These services are transmitted in both the L5 band (1176.45 MHz) and the S band (2498.028 MHz).
NavIC provides positioning accuracy within 10 meters across India and within 20 meters for the surrounding area up to 1500 km. Its timing accuracy is better than 50 nanoseconds. Additionally, the SPS signals are compatible with global navigation systems like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou.
Applications Of NavIC
Transportation (land, air, and sea)
Location-based services
Personal mobility
Resource management
Surveying and geodesy
