Description
The West Bengal government is preparing to begin basalt mining at the Deocha-Pachami coal mine in Birbhum district, spanning 326 acres. This initiative is part of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) efforts, aiming to attract investment and create local employment ahead of the 2026 elections.
Project Details
The Deocha-Pachami coal mine is the second-largest coal mine in Asia. Mining basalt is necessary as it overlays the coal deposits. The estimated reserves include 1,240 million tonnes (MT) of coal and 675 MT of basalt. The basalt thickness ranges from 100 to 350 meters in the region. The government has secured all required environmental clearances to begin operations.
Mining Operations
The first phase of mining will focus on removing the basalt layer. Initial operations will take place across 326 acres, with plans to acquire an additional 50 acres within six months. The mining will use open-cast techniques, with completion expected in over a year.
Economic Impact
The mining venture is expected to bring significant financial benefits. The mining agency will contribute 71.5% of the revenue to the state government. Basalt mining alone is projected to generate around ?5,000 crore, driven by its high demand for construction purposes.
State-Level Investment Synergy Committee
A new committee has been established to expedite investment-related approvals, focusing on land, fire safety, finance, MSME, housing, agriculture, and industry. The committee, led by the Chief Secretary, will meet biweekly to ensure timely decision-making.
Political Context
The project’s timing is strategically aligned with the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2024 to attract investment and address employment concerns in the state. The initiative aims to strengthen the ruling party’s position ahead of the elections by showcasing progress and economic development.
