Description

The Government of India has introduced a Bill for the establishment of Tribhuvan Sahkari University, which will be situated on the campus of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) in Gujarat. The Bill, presented in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Cooperation, Krishan Pal Gurjar, on February 3, 2025, aims to create an institution of national importance with a focus on cooperative education and training.

Purpose And Objectives

The Tribhuvan Sahkari University’s primary goal is to advance technical and management education within the cooperative sector. The institution will offer specialized training and promote research, development, and innovation, striving to meet global standards in cooperative education and addressing the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the sector.

Background And Vision

The concept for a National Cooperative University was initially introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in 2021 at the National Cooperative Conference. He emphasized the necessity of such an institution, citing the success of similar universities in countries like Germany and Kenya. The university is expected to enhance India's cooperative movement by providing high-quality education and training.

Unique Features

Tribhuvan Sahkari University will be India’s first dedicated university for cooperative education. It plans to establish specialized schools for various cooperative sectors such as dairy, fisheries, and banking. These schools will cater to the educational needs of different cooperative sectors across the country.

Structure And Affiliation

The university will have 4-5 affiliated colleges in states with a large number of cooperative societies and 1-2 colleges in states with fewer cooperatives. In addition, it will utilize online platforms like SWAYAM to increase accessibility and offer flexible learning options to students.

Importance Of Cooperative Sector

The cooperative sector is crucial to India’s economy, playing a significant role in agricultural credit, fertiliser production, and the procurement of essential goods. The establishment of Tribhuvan Sahkari University seeks to address the lack of standardized education and training within this sector and improve the quality of education for future professionals.

Impact On IRMA

The Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), established in 1979 by Dr. Verghese Kurien, will become a part of the new university structure. While retaining its identity, IRMA will now serve as a school within the university, expanding its role in promoting cooperative education. The dissolution of the IRMA society will formalize this transition.

Future Prospects

The creation of Tribhuvan Sahkari University is expected to offer a structured and standardized education framework for cooperative professionals, ensuring a steady supply of qualified individuals for various roles within cooperative societies. This move is in line with the government’s broader vision to strengthen India’s cooperative movement and support its development.
