Description

Reports suggest that the Russian Federation is preparing to significantly increase the production of Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles.

About Iskander-M

The Iskander (known in the West as SS-26 Stone) is a road-mobile, short-range ballistic missile system developed by Russia. It entered Russian military service in 2006 and was first deployed in combat in 2008 during the conflict with Georgia. The missile system is primarily designed for tactical strikes against small, high-priority land targets and is capable of utilizing various types of missiles.

Key Features

  • Length: 7.3 meters; Diameter: 0.92 meters; Launch weight: 3,750 kg.

  • Maximum range: 500 km.

  • Payload capacity: Between 480 and 700 kg.

  • It can be equipped with both conventional and nuclear warheads.

  • The missiles can reach speeds of up to Mach 7 (seven times the speed of sound) and altitudes exceeding 30 miles.

  • The Iskander-M incorporates a maneuverable reentry vehicle (MaRV) and decoys to evade theater missile defense systems.

  • It is equipped with advanced in-flight correction and self-targeting technologies to counter missile defense measures.

Variants

  • Iskander-E - The export version with a range of 280 km.

  • Iskander-K - A new version, revealed in 2007, which is equipped with the R-500 cruise missile, also with a range of 280 km.
