The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) was officially launched as a treaty-based intergovernmental organization with the aim of strengthening global conservation efforts for big cats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the IBCA on April 9, 2023, to mark the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger. Five founding nations signed the Framework Agreement, representing a significant step forward in wildlife conservation.
Formation And Membership
Approved by the Indian Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, the IBCA has its headquarters in India. Initially, five countries - Nicaragua, Eswatini, Somalia, Liberia, and India became founding members after depositing their ratification instruments. Currently, 27 countries have shown interest in joining the alliance.
Objectives Of IBCA
The IBCA’s core mission is to protect seven major big cat species: the Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma. The organization aims to foster collaboration among countries to unify conservation efforts.
