Description

A recent socio-economic survey conducted in Telangana has provided valuable insights into the state's demographic structure. Over 50 days, the survey reached more than 35 million individuals, helping to map out the population distribution across various caste groups, with Backward Classes (BC) forming the majority. The collected data will be used to improve welfare schemes and increase job opportunities for underrepresented communities.

Survey Details

The Telangana government initiated a comprehensive survey covering socio-economic, educational, employment, political, and caste factors. It encompassed 3,54,77,554 individuals, covering 96.9% of households in the state. The survey process involved 94,863 enumerators and 9,628 supervisors who worked across 94,261 enumeration blocks. Data entry was completed within 36 days by 76,000 operators. The survey was based on a resolution passed by the state Assembly in February 2024.

Population Distribution

The survey results show that Backward Classes (BC) make up 56.33% of Telangana’s population, followed by Scheduled Castes (SC) at 17.43%, and Scheduled Tribes (ST) at 10.45%. Other Castes (OC) account for 15.79%. In total, the BC population stands at around 19.99 million, including 3.58 million BC Muslims. The SC population is about 6.18 million, while the ST population is 3.70 million.

Muslim Population Breakdown

The total Muslim population in Telangana is approximately 4.46 million, which is around 12.56% of the state's total population. Among them, 10.08% are BC Muslims, and 2.48% belong to the OC Muslim category. This demographic breakdown is crucial for crafting targeted welfare policies.

Impact On Governance

The data gathered will aid in refining current welfare schemes and enhancing job opportunities for marginalized groups. The government intends to use the survey findings for data-driven policy-making, aligning with the promises made by the Congress party in the 2023 elections, under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Challenges Encountered

The survey faced several operational difficulties. A significant number of houses approximately 103,000 were locked during the enumeration. Additionally, 168,000 families were initially hesitant to participate. Some 84,137 households were misclassified, which added complexity to data collection. Despite these challenges, the survey saw a notable participation rate.

Future Outlook

The survey’s findings are expected to significantly shape future policy decisions in Telangana, focusing on improving the conditions of backward classes and other marginalized communities. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to social justice and inclusive governance.
