Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations focused on global health. Founded in 1948, its mission is to achieve the highest possible level of health for all people worldwide. WHO defines health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

The organization's key responsibilities include providing leadership on health matters, influencing the global health research agenda, setting international health standards, offering technical support to countries, and monitoring health trends. WHO has 193 member states and two associate members, with its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland.

WHO is governed by the World Health Assembly, which meets annually to make policy decisions, and an Executive Board composed of health experts elected by the assembly. The Director-General of WHO is nominated by the Executive Board and confirmed by the Assembly.

WHO's funding comes from two primary sources - mandatory dues paid by its member states, which account for approximately 16% of its budget, and voluntary contributions from governments and private organizations. Major donors have included the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

World Health Day, observed every year on April 7, marks the anniversary of the organization's founding in 1948.
